When we talk about nutrients, we usually think of vitamins and minerals such as zinc, calcium or folic acid. However, fats are also a type of nutrient that is essential for the body to function properly. Omega-3 fatty acids are an example of a fat with multiple benefits. Here's what you should know about these nutrients and their effects on reproductive cells and fertility in both sexes.

What are omega-3 fatty acids and where are they found?

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential polyunsaturated fatty acids. The human body needs them, although it cannot produce them. Therefore, the source of this type of fatty acid is the diet and supplements.

There are different types of omega-3 fatty acids, but in this publication, we will focus on just three of them: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA).

These omega-3 acids are found in seafood and oily fish such as tuna, salmon and anchovies, among others.

What are their benefits for male fertility?

In the case of men, scientific research suggests that DHA improves semen quality, sperm structure and motility, and is involved in sperm maturation. It also increases the sperm's ability to penetrate the egg during fertilisation.

In a study published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), it was found that fish oil (which contains omega-3 fatty acids) could increase testicular size and seminal volume.

In short, the scientific evidence points to omega-3 fatty acids boosting male fertility.

What are the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for female fertility?

For women, omega-3 fatty acids (DHA, EPA and DPA) help regulate ovulation, optimise egg quality and may even help delay ovarian ageing.

In short, omega-3 fatty acids optimise both male and female fertility.

Other fertility-enhancing foods

The role of nutrition in fertility is a topic of great interest and continues to be studied extensively today. Hence, new scientific evidence suggests that other nutrients such as vitamin D, Zinc or Selenium also improve female and/or male fertility. Interesting, isn't it?
