Do ovarian cysts affect fertility?

What are ovarian cysts? Are they common, and do they prevent pregnancy? These are some of the most frequently asked questions about ovarian cysts. For this reason, here is everything you should know about ovarian cysts.

What are ovarian cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs or sacs that form in or on the surface of an ovary. Most cysts occur during the menstrual cycle and are not harmful. These types of cysts are called functional cysts and are quite common. However, there are also certain types which are more unusual.

Types of ovarian cysts

As mentioned above, functional cysts are the result of a normal menstrual cycle. Within this type of cysts we find the following:

  • Follicular cysts: these kinds of cysts form when the follicle does not break to release the egg and continues to grow into a cyst. They do not usually cause symptoms and normally disappear after three months at its most.
  • Corpus luteum cysts: This type of cyst forms because of the opening through which the egg has hatched closes and accordingly, fluid accumulates inside the follicle. They often cause symptoms such as pain or bleeding, but they tend to disappear after a few weeks.

In addition, there are other types of cysts that are not associated with the menstrual cycle and are usually benign:

  • Endometriomas: caused by endometriosis.
  • Dermoid cysts or teratomas: these are formed from embryonic cells. They may contain hair follicles, sebaceous or sweat glands.
  • Cystadenoma: formed on the surface of an ovary may be filled with a watery or mucous material.

On the other hand, malignant ovarian cysts also exist, however they are less common than the ones we have previously mentioned.

Diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cysts

The diagnosis of ovarian cysts is made through ultrasound scans. For this reason, we recommend regular pelvic examinations. We also advise paying attention to unusual signs and symptoms such as absence of menstruation, irregular periods or pelvic pain.

Treatment, however, depends on the type of cyst. Nonetheless, benign cysts generally do not require treatment.

Do ovarian cysts cause infertility?

In general, most ovarian cysts do not compromise fertility, although sometimes the pathology that causes them may imply fertility problems, such as endometriosis or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
