Orgasms and the pelvic floor: their relationship with fertility

03 / 09 / 2025

Although at first glance they may seem secondary to reproductive success, the impact of orgasm and pelvic floor health can significantly influence women's fertility.

Orgasm and fertility: is there a relationship?

While orgasm is not a prerequisite for conception, its relationship with sexual function, psychological well-being, and couple dynamics can positively influence natural fertility.

In addition, there are other mechanisms that could explain its beneficial effect on achieving pregnancy:

Uterine and pelvic contractions.

The contractions of the uterus and pelvic floor that occur during orgasm could help the semen move up toward the cervix and uterus, thus facilitating sperm transport.

Improved natural lubrication

Orgasm is associated with increased vaginal lubrication and slight dilation of the cervix, which could facilitate the passage of sperm. In addition, increased blood flow in the pelvic area helps to create a more receptive environment.

Pelvic floor and fertility

The pelvic floor is the set of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that close the lower part of the pelvis and support the bladder, uterus, vagina, and rectum in women.

Its functional status plays an important role in overall gynecological health and sexual response, which can indirectly impact fertility.

A healthy pelvic floor contributes to better sexual function and can therefore promote desire and increase the frequency of sexual intercourse. In addition, good muscle tone facilitates contractions that help transport sperm through the female reproductive tract.

Conversely, the presence of pain or the inability to have satisfying sexual intercourse can reduce the frequency of sexual encounters and negatively impact women's emotional well-being.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a useful tool not only for women seeking pregnancy, but also throughout all stages of life, as it helps improve sexual function, prevent dysfunction, and optimize gynecological health.

Orgasm and pelvic floor health are part of a comprehensive approach to fertility. Addressing these issues can not only improve women's sexual experience and emotional well-being, but also increase the chances of achieving pregnancy.
