Does egg donation affect fertility?

Gamete donation in assisted reproduction is a subject that generates a lot of curiosity. For this reason, in this publication, we will answer the most frequently asked questions concerning egg donation .

What does egg donation consist of?

This treatment begins with menstruation. Ovarian stimulation is carried out along hormonal treatment, and they are monitored through ultrasound controls. Follicular puncture is then carried out to extract the eggs and, once menstruation begins, a call is made to the clinic to carry out an ultrasound scan.

Can eggs be given if I am taking hormonal contraceptives?

Women who are taking hormonal contraceptives can donate eggs but must stop taking them during the month of treatment.

On the other hand, women with IUDs can donate eggs and are not required to have them removed in order to be a donor.

Is the treatment painful?

No, both ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval are painless. However, you may notice some discomfort such as bloating (alike PMS) as the size of the ovaries increases due to the hormone treatment.

How long does the process take?

The duration between stimulation and ovarian puncture is approximately 12 days. Subsequently, when menstruation begins, a follow-up ultrasound scan should be performed.

Is it possible to have sexual intercourse during the donation process?

No, during ovarian stimulation you cannot engage in strenuous physical activity or sexual intercourse. This is because it increases the risk of unwanted pregnancy and abdominal discomfort. With the onset of menstruation, these activities could be retaken.

Is there a limit to the number of times I can donate eggs?

According to the Spanish Assisted Reproduction Law 14/2006, egg donation must be altruistic and anonymous and the maximum number of children generated by the same donor must not exceed six.

Does egg donation reduce fertility?

Women are born with a limited number of oocytes, best known as ovarian reserve . In each menstrual cycle, many of these oocytes are lost, as only one of them manages to mature to be fertilised. These oocytes, which in these cases would be lost, are the ones used in egg donation. With ovarian stimulation, we manage to ensure that the greatest number of oocytes mature so that they can later be extracted and transferred to another woman. In short, oocyte donation does not compromise female fertility nor does it have any impact on the donors' ovarian reserve so consequently, they will have the same chances of becoming pregnant in the future.
