IVF at Barcelona IVF: success rates, clinical context and realistic expectations

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is one of the most widely used assisted reproduction treatments and consistently achieves some of the highest success rates. For this reason, when someone considers starting fertility treatment, one of the first questions is usually about their chances of success.

Success rates are a useful reference for understanding a clinic’s results. These figures are only meaningful when interpreted in their clinical context.

The reality is that no percentage can predict the outcome for a specific patient, as the chances of success depend on multiple individual factors.

Age has an influence, but it does not explain everything

A woman’s age remains one of the factors with the greatest impact on IVF results. With increasing age, both the quantity and quality of the eggs decrease.

For this reason, success rates are usually analysed by age group. At Barcelona IVF we use the cumulative pregnancy rate per cycle, an indicator that reflects the probability of achieving a pregnancy using all the embryos obtained in the same ovarian stimulation cycle, whether the transfer is performed fresh or later with vitrified embryos from that same cycle.

According to this indicator, our IVF success rates are:

  • 79.7% in women under 35 years of age*.
  • 77.8% between 35 and 38 years of age*.
  • 59.2% between 39 and 42 years of age*.
  • 17.5% in women over 42 years of age*.

However, age is not the only factor that influences the outcome. Ovarian reserve, semen quality, reproductive history, embryo quality and certain medical conditions can also influence treatment outcomes.

The importance of the team and the laboratory

IVF results do not depend solely on the characteristics of the patients. Factors related to the experience of the medical team and the quality of the assisted reproduction laboratory also play a role.

Processes such as fertilisation, embryo culture, vitrification and embryo selection require advanced technology, rigorous protocols and close coordination between gynaecologists and embryologists.

At Barcelona IVF, the joint work of a highly specialised team and an in-house, state-of-the-art laboratory allows us to optimise every stage of treatment and provide personalised care in each case.

More than a percentage

Success rates are a useful reference, but they do not tell the whole story. Behind every treatment there is a person with unique circumstances, expectations and specific needs.

For this reason, at Barcelona IVF, the goal is not only to achieve good results, but also to offer individualised care, clear information and close support throughout the entire process. The best approach to fertility treatment combines experience, technology and patient-centred care.
