Why is nutrition important during pregnancy?

Have you ever heard that "we are what we eat". Indeed, nutrition is an essential pillar throughout our lives, but this is even more special and important during pregnancy.

Since, during these months of pregnancy, you are the only source of nutrients for your baby. This connection between the two is made through the placenta and the umbilical cord, reaching nutrients that you ingest to the baby.

How can I have a proper diet during my pregnancy?

Your doctor and nutritionist will give you the guidelines that you must follow before and throughout the pregnancy, since the needs are different at all times.

Some general tips are:

  • Make between 4 and 5 meals a day and avoid snacking between meals. Try to have dinner soon!

  • Increases the consumption of fruits and vegetables, to meet a greater demand for vitamins and minerals.

  • Eat fish 3-4 times a week. Blue fish is mainly recommended.

  • Try to drink from 2.3 liters of water a day, which is between 8 and 10 glasses. Keep in mind that food also gives you water.
  • Moderate your salt intake.

  • Do not smoke or consume alcohol.

Which nutrients are especially important?

La Nutrition must be understood as a global process in which each piece is important. Although, there are certain nutrients that have a special relevance before, during and after pregnancy.

  • Folic acid or vitamin B: It has an essential role at the beginning of the development of the fetus since it helps to form the neural tube. In addition, it helps prevent some serious brain defects. It is important before and during pregnancy.

  • Iron: The requirements during pregnancy increase in order to transport oxygen and nutrients through the blood. Although demand increases, supplementation is generally not necessary

  • Omega-3 fatty acids: They are important for the proper development of the baby's brain and eyes. You can consume it in blue fish and eggs.

  • Calcium: Helps the development of baby's bones and maintain yours. Demand increases during pregnancy and lactation.

In short, a healthy and balanced diet can have a positive impact on pregnancy.
