When unfortunately our most important desires in life are not fulfilled, many thoughts and emotions appear about it. Some people are more adaptable than others and it also depends on the importance of the unfulfilled plan for us. In the case of assisted reproduction, the first fear that overwhelms us is when we are looking for a pregnancy at home and it does not happen despite the passage of months... This is where the first question appears, what if I have something that does not work well in my body? This is the first fear we face. The second fear is when they can't find anything that justifies not getting pregnant. The lack of understanding in the face of an event despairs and scares us. This fear has a parallel one and it is when they find some factor causing the non-pregnancy and we are afraid that they will not be able to solve it medically.
In assisted reproduction, what are the fears?
We have to normalize this type of fear. It is logical to think that something that most people take for granted, such as the ability to get pregnant, when it is not achieved makes us consider a thousand situations even talking about the luck factor. We have to think that this is a novel situation that is not contemplated, but that we can still achieve our objective even if it is in a different way.
Initiation of assisted reproduction
Once we decide to perform an assisted reproduction technique (hereinafter ART), the fears change shape but do not disappear completely. What effects will the medication have on my body? Will it make me feel bad? Will it have any side effects? What will happen in the operating room, and if the anesthesia affects me? The first way to deal with fear is through information. When they explain to us what should happen, even the professional experience of those who help us, we are calmer because the brain receives rational strategies to deal with these negative thoughts.
What if pregnancy does not arrive?
The most intense fear we face in ART is the possibility that the desired pregnancy will not arrive. Unfortunately, reproduction specialists cannot offer us guarantees, but they can offer us good opportunities to achieve it, and on a psychological level, this support is very important to be able to manage all the emotions that appear during these processes. Providing information in an open and appropriate way, sharing emotions and working on them so that they fit the vital moment and making the right decisions, will gradually keep fears minimal and do not affect our lives in a disruptive way.
