The Barcelona IVF team
In assisted reproduction, patients with the same diagnosis may need different strategies. Age, ovarian reserve, reproductive history, gamete quality and response to previous treatments are some of the factors that can influence both the choice of treatment and the way it is approached.
That is why, at Barcelona IVF, we do not start with a treatment and decide which patient to apply it to; we start with each patient and define which strategy makes the most sense in her case. Understanding her history, carrying out an individualised assessment and recognising her needs form the basis of our care model.
Every treatment begins with an individualised assessment.
Before deciding which treatment to carry out, it is necessary to understand the starting point of each patient or couple. The initial assessment allows us to analyse their situation, identify the most appropriate options and clearly explain what can be expected from each one.
We also believe that personalisation means not recommending more tests or procedures than are necessary. Every decision must be based on a specific clinical need and provide relevant information to define the most appropriate strategy.
The same treatment does not have to be identical for every patient.
Even when two patients receive the same treatment, the process may be different. The ovarian stimulation protocol, medication, doses and monitoring are adapted to each woman’s characteristics and her response during the cycle.
Other decisions are also individualised, such as the laboratory strategy, the timing of embryo transfer or the indication for complementary techniques.
For us, therefore, talking about IVF, egg donation or the ROPA method means defining a type of treatment, but not an identical protocol for every patient.
Adapting the strategy to each patient’s progress.
The initial strategy is important, but it is not definitive. As treatment progresses, we obtain new information that allows us to assess how it is evolving and adjust decisions when necessary.
Personalisation is therefore not only about designing an individualised strategy from the outset, but also about knowing how to adapt it throughout the process.
Decisions are made together with the patient
Personalised medicine is not limited to adapting clinical aspects. It also involves explaining the available options, answering questions and considering each patient’s circumstances and preferences, always within safe, evidence-based medical practice.
We want our patients to understand why we recommend a particular strategy, what alternatives are available and what can be expected from each one. In this way, they can take an informed part in the decisions involved in their treatment.
A way of understanding reproductive medicine
At Barcelona IVF, we believe that personalisation comes from combining clinical experience, technology and scientific knowledge to make the most appropriate decisions in each case. It is not about using every available resource, but about knowing which ones can add value for each patient and at what point.
This way of understanding reproductive medicine is the foundation of our care model: not adapting the patient to a protocol but adapting the strategy to the patient.
