Hormonal contraceptives and fertility

There are many methods of hormonal contraception, such as the vaginal ring, patches or birth control pills. But what happens when you stop using these methods? Have you ever wondered whether they could affect your fertility, or even how long do you have to wait between stopping contraception and trying to get pregnant? We will be answering all these questions below.

How do hormonal contraceptive methods work?

The purpose of the menstrual cycle is to prepare and release an egg each month, as well as to prepare the endometrium. This cycle is regulated by the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland and the ovaries. The hypothalamus is a part of the brain whilst the pituitary is a gland that regulates ovarian function, which is also located in the brain.

On the other hand, there are two types of contraceptive methods: hormonal and non-hormonal. The latter use hormones such as progesterone and oestrogens, in order to prevent the release of luteinising hormones (LH) and follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) by the pituitary gland and therefore, inhibit ovulation. In addition, they also thicken the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from passing up the cervix. Hormonal contraceptives can be administered by different routes, so there are different options for use: the vaginal ring, oral contraceptives, injectable contraceptives, the subdermal implant, etc.

Do hormonal contraceptive methods cause fertility problems?

No, the effect of these contraceptives is reversible and disappears when you finish using them, regardless of how long you have been on them. Fertility is restored immediately or a few cycles after the last administration. For this reason, and going against popular belief, it is possible to seek pregnancy immediately after stopping them. However, in the case of injectable gestagens, due to their high hormonal dose, they do cause a slight delay in the recovery of fertility.

Do they induce multiple pregnancies?

Currently, there is no scientific evidence that shows that hormonal contraceptive methods induce multiple pregnancies.

Barcelona IVF recommends that you consult your doctor if you have any doubts about hormonal contraceptives.
