The COVID-19 pandemic has put mental health on the agenda. It is estimated that 1 in 4 people have or will have a mental health problem in their lifetime. Anxiety and depression are the most common disorders in the general population, but what about assisted reproduction , do they increase in pregnant women or women with infertility, and how can we minimise them? In this publication we reflect on this issue.
Mental health disorders in assisted reproduction
Most studies on mental health and assisted reproduction note that mental health disorders are highly prevalent. In particular, a study published in Human Reproduction noted that 40.3% of women had a psychiatric disorder during their treatment, with anxiety and depression being the most prevalent.
Stress as a risk factor
Generally, women attending fertility clinics have a certain degree of stress due to infertility symptoms, constant menstrual cycle testing (with scheduled intercourse) or fear of the medical process involved in assisted reproduction. This level of stress, accompanied by repeated negative thoughts, is a risk factor for mental health disorders in fertility treatment.
Here are some ways to take care of yourself that can improve your mental health:
- Practice relaxation, meditation, yoga or mindfulness: these techniques can reduce stress and anxiety.
- Enhance your social relationships, especially communication with your partner.
- Maintain an active lifestyle. Regular exercise has a great impact on mental health.
- Eat a healthy diet. What we eat and drink also influences our mood. Avoid abusing harmful substances such as alcohol or tobacco.
- Seek help and support from a health specialist. It is important to emphasise that seeking psychological support has a positive effect on women and, therefore, we recommend that all women undergoing assisted reproduction treatment seek psychological support.
At Barcelona IVF , all patients have at their disposal a team of psychologists who accompany them in the decision of a lifetime: the experience of becoming a mother.
