Medication, pregnancy and breastfeeding

Medication, pregnancy and breastfeeding

The most important recomendation

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends avoiding, as much as possible, medicine during pregnancy. If you need any medication, it must be your doctor who informs you about it, even medication without prescription such as painkillers. In addition, there is a classification of medications during pregnancy that allows us to know which ones to avoid, which ones are safe and which we do not have enough evidence about. The last case is due to the fact that, for ethical reasons, clinical trials of drugs cannot be performed on pregnant women.

Are there other risks during any phase of the pregnancy?

The risks caused by the administration of drugs during pregnancy are teratogenic effects (fetal deformities) and alterations in the functions of the fetus' organs. The highest risk occurs during the organ formation stage (organogenesis), between week 3 and 8 of pregnancy. After the first trimester of gestation, there is a reduction of the chances of deformities, although this does not mean that it becomes a safe period.

“I took this, and it went very well, try it.”

How many times have you heard this sentence? Unfortunately, this happens daily with the neighbors, the influencers and other people around us. We always repeat that all people are different and what is good for one, is not for another. Therefore, on health issues, consult with health professionals. We know it sounds typical, but it is important. Also, being pregnant, will you leave your baby's health in the hands of just anyone?

Don't trust during the breastfeeding’s period

Sometimes we focus too much on the pregnancy period and believe that breastfeeding is not that important. That’s a mistake! There are many medications that can be filtered to breast milk and reach the baby’s body. Do not forget to check with your doctor.

“Natural” medicine, yes or no?

One of the great myths of health is to consider that products extracted from plants are harmless. That’s a mistake! Plants contain chemicals that may or may not affect negatively our bodies and, therefore, they may also harm the fetus. Not all herbal remedies are the same, so it is important not to forget to check with your doctor about everything you are taking (as much as they can seem harmless).

In BarcelonaIVF we have the ideas clear: in order that everything goes well during this magical period, trust the specialists. If doubting, consult your doctor.
