Being a single mom

Being a single mom
share

In the last decades, social changes have positively influenced on the woman’s autonomy to work and to decide on her body and on her motherhood.

The difficulties of being a single mom

The decision of being a single mom, of facing motherhood without a partner, is undoubtedly a well-thought-out decision. Perhaps, for some women, it will be a more difficult choice to make because of social standards and pressures; for others, it might be an easier choice. What they have in common, is they all share the dream of becoming mothers, and they choose it freely and voluntarily.

Fertility treatments for single moms

The medical team will orientate the woman towards the most adequate treatment for her, according to her personal characteristics in order to help her achieve her dream. The recommended treatment when the tubes are permeable and the ovarian reserve is correct, is intrauterine insemination with a sperm donor. In case there is a problem with the tubes, or not being able to achieve a pregnancy after many tries, it will be recommended to switch to an in vitro fertilization treatment with sperm donor. If the woman presents a low ovarian reserve and a low response to the hormonal stimulation, it might then be indicated a “double donation”: egg donation with sperm bank.

Emotional support for single mothers

Facing single motherhood is a vital step, and women who decide to do it are not alone. In the assisted reproduction clinics, doctors and psychologists are at the woman’s disposal to solve the doubts and questions she might have, from the beginning of the selection of the sperm donor to the possible genetic grief related to a double donation.

There are associations, forums and groups which accompany women who choose to form a single-parent family. While being accompanied, they can share their restlessness, fears, and hopes. There are also books with testimonials that help when it comes to making the decision, plan and arrange this great life project. Once we have our baby in our arms, there are children’s books to help you tell the child who was born because of an assisted reproduction technique their origin through a fun and tender way.

Motherhood is difficult, with or without a partner. Even though the efforts made during the treatment and during the pregnancy are of considerable dimensions, these will be diminished when the baby is born and he/she demands our attention at all times. The happiness of having achieved the dream will give you strength to keep on facing the long path ahead. It is important to remember that single-motherhood does not imply being alone.
