Egg vitrification can delay the age of childbearing, but what other advantages does it offer? When should the eggs be devitrified once they have been frozen? Here is a brief overview of this procedure.
What is the egg vitrification technique?
Egg vitrification is a process used in assisted reproduction centres to preserve fertility. Firstly, a study of the ovarian reserve is carried out by means of an analysis and a vaginal ultrasound scan in order to optimise the treatment as much as possible.
Subsequently, ovarian stimulation and follicular puncture is carried out for 10-12 days. The eggs are then frozen using the vitrification process: ultra-rapid freezing by submerging them in cryoprotective agents and liquid nitrogen.
How long can the eggs be frozen?
There is no time limit, the frozen eggs can be preserved for as long as you wish. Moreover, the time does not affect the quality of the eggs.
Will this technique affect my menstrual cycle?
In this process of egg freezing, a stimulation is carried out to obtain the oocytes, to optimise the ovarian response. However, once vitrification has been completed, there is no effect on the patient's menstrual cycle.
Why should I freeze my eggs?
Family patterns and customs have changed over the years. Nowadays, there are many women who want to be mothers, but feel that it is not the right time for different reasons: they do not want to be single mothers and do not have a partner, they do not have economic stability, etc. Thanks to techniques such as egg freezing, it is possible to postpone motherhood. But delaying the age of motherhood is not the only goal of women who undergo the egg freezing process. Another advantage of this process is that the vitrified eggs are younger and therefore the success rates are higher and the risk of miscarriage is reduced. In addition, it allows optimisation of IVF cycles, i.e. better planning of IVF cycles. Finally, in women with low ovarian reserve, it enables the accumulation of eggs by performing different ovarian stimulations and punctures.
