Inclusive fertility: pathways to motherhood for the LGBTI+ community

26 / 06 / 2025

The desire to be a mother and start a family is not affected by sexual orientation or gender identity. Nowadays, thanks to advances in assisted reproduction , more and more women can become mothers without having to rely on the traditional family model.

Diverse motherhoods, equal opportunities

Reproductive medicine offers different techniques to enable women to become mothers regardless of their personal situation. Some of the most used are:

  • Artificial insemination with donor sperm

This is one of the simplest and most accessible options. It consists of depositing semen inside the uterus when the woman is ovulating. It is recommended for women under 35/38 years of age in good reproductive health. It is a very common technique among single women or female couples who wish to become mothers.

  • In vitro fertilisation (IVF) with donor sperm

Recommended for women over 35/38 years of age, with low ovarian reserve or after several failed attempts at insemination. This technique allows for greater precision in embryo selection and can also be combined with advanced techniques such as egg vitrification or preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).

  • ROPA method (reception of partner's eggs)

This is one of the most advanced techniques for motherhood between female couples. This technique makes it possible for both women to participate in and share the pregnancy process of their future child. One of them will be the genetic mother, as she will provide the egg, and the other will be the gestational or biological mother. This is a highly valued technique on an emotional level, as both mothers share a biological bond with their future child.

  • Preservation of fertility

Vitrification is a very important tool, especially for transgender people who are going to start hormone treatments or undergo surgical interventions that may affect their fertility, as it allows them to preserve their gametes before starting the process.

Respectful, informed, and inclusive medical care

At Barcelona IVF we understand that each story is unique. That's why we are committed to medical care based on respect, active listening, and empathy. Our commitment to inclusive fertility goes beyond medicine: we want everyone to feel supported, safe, and free from prejudice from day one. All women deserve access to clear information, real options, and close support on their path to motherhood.

Starting a family shouldn't depend on who you are or who you love, but it depends on your desire to make it a reality.
