How is IVF carried out?
In the first phase of the treatment, the woman's ovulation is stimulated by administering hormones and then the ovarian puncture is carried out. The oocytes are extracted by means of a simple surgical procedure via the vagina, under local anaesthesia and lasting 5-10 minutes.
In the laboratory, the follicular fluid aspirated is analysed in search of eggs for insemination. About 4-5 hours later, the sperm is injected into each egg and the eggs are left in culture in an incubator that maintains optimal conditions for them to develop.
The next step is to transfer the embryos in a simple procedure that requires no anaesthesia or admission. It is completely painless and short in duration. The gynaecologist inserts a catheter through the cervix and the embryos are deposited inside the uterus. The remaining embryos are kept for successive cycles, in which the woman would only have to undergo this last procedure.
