What are the symptoms of Zika virus infection?

People who are infected with the Zika virus may have only mild or no symptoms. The most common symptoms of Zika are:

  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Headache, muscle and joint pain
  • Red eyes

Symptoms can last from several days to a week. It rarely presents as a serious illness. On the other hand, pregnant women should take extreme caution.

How is the Zika virus transmitted?

Mosquitoes of the Aedes species can be infected with the Zika virus. In turn, the virus can reach humans through the bite of these infected mosquitoes. This is the main form of transmission.

Another form of transmission is through sexual intercourse with an infected person. Also, infected pregnant women can transmit the virus to the fetus.

So far there is no vaccine or specific treatment to prevent or treat Zika.

Why should pregnant women be especially careful?

During pregnancy, the Zika virus can reach the fetus from the mother and can cause certain birth defects such as microcephaly (incomplete development of the brain) or eye problems. These problems can appear from birth or manifest later.

How can I protect myself if I am pregnant?

The best way to protect yourself is to avoid being bitten by these mosquitoes. These mosquitoes are located mainly in part of the American, African and Asian continent. So far, its presence in Europe is very limited.

If you are going to live or travel to a place where this mosquito lives:

  • Use a suitable insect repellent.
  • Dress in long-sleeved clothing and long pants.
  • Avoid being near standing water where the mosquito can live.

If you are pregnant or planning it, you can ask all your questions to your doctor.
