Sperm Donors, what do I need to know?

Sperm donation is a voluntary and generous action by which a healthy man donates his sperm (of good quality) to help other people who have fertility problems or that do not have a male partner.

How are the donors? Is there any requirement to be a donor?

Sperm donors are mental and physically healthy young men. It is mandatory to go through a series of tests before donating in order to rule out possible diseases.

Some of these tests are:

  • Study of personal and family background

  • Psychological assessment

  • Andrological assessment

  • Blood tests

The seminogram is the test used to evaluate the quality of sperm, although it gives good results it is not a guarantee for being a donor. Good quality is not the only requirement, also recovery and good survival capacity after defrosting are required.

Is it possible to know their identity? Which information will we be given about a donor?

In Spain donation is anonymous. Thus, both the donor and the patient’s identities are protected.

Moreover, you can be given general information about the donor such as his physical characteristics, his blood group and his age. It very important to consider that we always respect the law related to the privacy of all the parts involved.

Which are the criteria used to choose one donor instead of another?

The medical team oversees the selection of the donor based on the physical characteristics of the patients and their blood groups. Due to this high responsibility represented by the choice, it is important to trust in a good team. In Barcelona IVF we consider the peculiarities of each case in order to select the donor that best suits to each patient.
