AMH or Anti-Mullerian Hormone is a hormone that is produced in the female ovary. The little ovarian follicles secrete AMH and it is very important as it regulates the number of follicles that grow in a menstrual cycle and are available for selection.
AMH is one of the best indicators regarding ovarian reserve, together with the antral follicle count performed by an ultrasound scan. The great advantage of AMH is that the values don’t depend on a specific day of the cycle and can be determined at any moment.
Low AMH values are correlated with a low ovarian reserve and high values with an increased risk of ovarian hyperstimulation when undergoing an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
