Egg freezing: am I still on time?

share

Do you want to become a mother, but do not think it is the right time? Are you going to undergo a treatment that might affect your reproductive capacity and want to preserve your fertility? If so, egg freezing might be a good choice for you.

What is egg freezing?

A woman’s fertility preservation consists in freezing the eggs at an age where her potential of becoming pregnant is still good. The first step is a study of the ovarian reserve through a blood test and a gynaecological scan in order to be able to optimize the treatment at its best. The next step, in order to obtain the eggs, would be to begin a stimulation process and, then, an egg retrieval. Once they are retrieved, they are frozen under the vitrification technique. During the procedure, the cell we are willing to preserve is dehydrated in an ultra-fast way, in order to avoid cellular damage.

Can all women do it whenever they feel like doing it?

No. For this method to be successful, we must take in account the woman’s age and her ovarian reserve. There is not an ideal moment to do it, although it is recommended to do it before turning 38 years old because of the higher amount of eggs and their quality. Still, a previous evaluation of the ovarian reserve shall be performed.

How does egg freezing affect eggs and pregnancy?

Contrary to popular belief, this method allows to preserve the eggs’ properties just like the moment they were frozen. Regarding the possible long-term side effects or difficulties during pregnancy, there is no scientific evidence for health damages associated to children conceived after an egg freezing treatment.

The longer they remain frozen, the lower the quality?

No. Egg vitrification allows to freeze the eggs for as long as you want, preserving their quality. If you want to solve more doubts like this, consult Barcelona IVF. We will be glad to help you and accompany you in every moment.
