How is it performed?

The TUNEL technique requires the terminal deoxynucleotide transferase enzyme (TdT) to mark the 3' free end of DNA. This technique is able to detect single and double strand breaks in DNA, and can be analyzed by fluorescence microscopy (Figure 1a) or flow cytometry.
