What Could a Twinging Pain in the Ovaries Mean?
The twinges that some women experience in the ovarian area are often related to the moment of ovulation. In medical terms, this phenomenon is referred to as intermenstrual pelvic pain.
The characteristic symptoms of intermenstrual pelvic pain are:
- Pain localized on one side of the lower abdomen, which may or may not change from month to month.
- Variable duration, from a few minutes to several hours, but, generally speaking, it does not exceed 24 to 48 hours.
- A sharp or cramping-like pain.
- Occurrence in the middle of the menstrual cycle, coinciding with ovulation.
As explained, ovulation is the primary cause of these twinges. However, if there is any doubt, we recommend undergoing diagnostic tests to rule out other conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, or pelvic infections. Less common causes may include ectopic pregnancy, ovarian torsion, or uterine fibroids.
Additionally, we recommend consulting a doctor if you notice changes in the frequency, intensity, or duration of the pain, or if you experience other symptoms such as fever, abnormal vaginal bleeding, unusual discharge, or if the pain disrupts daily activities.
