What Are the Consequences of Having Small Ovaries?

Small or atrophic ovaries usually indicate reduced or absent ovarian activity.

The most common physiological cause of small ovaries is menopause, during which the ovaries gradually decrease in size due to the absence of follicles and ovarian activity. Other medical conditions, such as primary ovarian insufficiency, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, or prior ovarian surgeries, can also affect ovarian size.

Although ovarian size is an important factor in achieving pregnancy, other aspects must also be assessed, such as the patient’s ovarian reserve and egg quality. A comprehensive diagnosis allows designing a personalized treatment plan to increase the chances of pregnancy.
